Presidents’ Day 2023

Feb 17,2023 – Feb 20, 2023

How did a presidents’ birthday turn into one of the biggest retail holidays?

Presidents’ Day originated as a federal holiday in the United States to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States, whose birthday falls on February 22nd. The holiday was established in 1885 to recognize Washington’s contributions to the nation.

In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted the observance of Washington’s birthday from February 22nd to the third Monday in February, creating a three-day weekend. This change aimed to create more three-day weekends for the workforce and stimulate retail sales.

As Presidents Day became a federal holiday observed on a Monday, it provided an opportunity for retailers to hold sales events over a long weekend. With Presidents Day falling in February, it makes an ideal time for retailers to clear out winter inventory and make room for spring merchandise. In the furniture world, new styles were introduced at the recent Las Vegas Winter Market, so there is inventory to move and ideas to share with those in-market for furniture.

Black Friday 2.0

Gathering essential data on your customers has never been more important. Although President’s Day sales may never be as big as those on Black Friday, this year we are starting to see a crossover between the two sales holidays.

As we all know, over the last few years Black Friday has become a month-long sales event. Similarly, President’s day sales are becoming week long sales rather than being limited to Friday-Monday. President’s Day is Monday, but sales have already started.

Analysts are noting a particularly promising trend this year, with Presidents’ Day deals surpassing those of previous years, particularly on high-value items. This presents a prime opportunity for retailers to attract customers with compelling offers and drive sales across a range of product categories.
