Target's Digital Revolution: How AI and Social Media Are Reshaping the In-Store Experience

The pandemic has cemented online shopping habits, leaving shoppers expecting something special when they visit physical stores. If customers can easily shop with a few clicks from home, store owners need to create compelling reasons for them to make the trip. According to a recent Shopify study, successful shops are investing in thoughtful store design with just the right lighting, building community spaces where people can gather and connect, offering personalized services like custom gift creation, and crafting in-store experiences that engage all five senses.

Beyond just the physical space, you can bring more people through your doors by focusing on meaningful face-to-face interactions, creating multipurpose spaces that blend shopping with cafés or workshops, rewarding loyal customers with special programs, and offering convenient pickup options.

Other winning approaches include welcoming pets, creating “Instagrammable” moments in your shop, teaming up with complementary businesses, personalizing offers, launching exclusive product drops, and using targeted local ads or influencer partnerships. Today’s most successful brick-and-mortar shops understand they’re more than just places to buy things—they’re brand hubs delivering experiences that online shopping simply can’t match.

Productivity Games: Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Looking to boost team spirit and sales numbers with some healthy competition? “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” is an engaging team contest that turns the path to sales success into a colorful journey to the Emerald City!

HOW TO SET UP: Create a visually appealing Yellow Brick Road game board with numbered bricks leading to the Emerald City. Assign a specific dollar value to each brick. Divide your sales team into two equal teams and create a tally board to track each team’s sales progress. Mark certain bricks as “green milestones” for bonus opportunities, and prepare a “Wicked Witch’s Brewing Pot” filled with consequence cards for handling returns.

HOW THE GAME WORKS: Teams work together to accumulate sales that match the value of each brick on the road. When a team’s combined sales total reaches the value of the next brick, they move their game piece forward toward the Emerald City. Teams that land on green milestone bricks get to “Go Over the Rainbow” and select an envelope containing a certificate for a small prize. However, whenever a team member processes a return from a sale made during the game, they must draw a “bad spell” from the Wicked Witch’s Brewing Pot, which may cause their team to lose ground.

Tip for Store Managers: This game can be adapted for individual competition by having staff create game pieces representing their favorite Wizard of Oz characters. For added visual appeal, find a black cookpot for the Wicked Witch’s Brewing Pot and rest a broomstick next to it. The competitive journey toward a common destination creates sustained excitement, with the first team to reach the Emerald City winning the grand prize. The game’s colorful theme and progressive reward structure keep staff engaged throughout the sales period while building camaraderie among team members working toward a shared goal.

Havenly's Bold Brick-and-Mortar Expansion

Despite current economic challenges in the home furnishings industry, Havenly is boldly expanding its brick-and-mortar presence. CEO Lee Mayer recently opened a second store for The Citizenry, their artisan-driven furnishings brand, in Dallas—strategically positioning themselves ahead of anticipated market rebounds. As Mayer explains, they’re taking “a measured approach to leaning into the market” with plans for store refreshes and potential expansions across all Havenly brands this year, even as the housing slowdown continues to impact furniture sales.

This physical retail strategy makes sense considering brick-and-mortar still accounts for nearly 83% of all purchases, according to eMarketer. For premium brands like The Citizenry, in-store experiences allow customers to physically interact with high-quality products before making investment purchases. Beyond the “touch and feel” advantage, physical stores boost brand awareness, create opportunities for experiential marketing, and lift online sales in surrounding markets.

As Mayer puts it, the key challenge is “to inspire people to take action” in today’s cautious spending environment, finding “creative ways to have you remember that you should buy something lovely for your home.”
