Evolution of furniture shopping behavior
Contrary to traditional notions, where online and in-store shopping were separate channels or distinct phases, today’s consumers seamlessly navigate between digital platforms and physical showrooms.
The recently released 3D Cloud Furniture Shopping Trends Study 2024 looks into shifting consumer behaviors, illustrating the movement toward a hybrid shopping future that blends convenience, customization, and immersive experiences.
Last month, George Hanson, EVP, Chief Digital Officer for Mattress Firm noted that though 90 percent of sales occur in-store, 90 percent of customer journeys start online.
The study found that in the furniture industry, 19% of consumers shop exclusively online, 33% shop in-store only, and 48% shop both online and in-store. When it comes to making a furniture purchase, 47% browsed online before purchasing in-store, and 20% viewed in-store before purchasing online. 17% purchased in-store only, and only 16% shopped and purchased online only.
Update: Retail economic indicators
The latest retail sales data for March surpassed expectations, indicating strong consumer demand despite inflation and economic uncertainties.
Factors like Easter and tax refunds likely boosted spending, along with Amazon’s spring sale. Analysts view March’s 4% YOY increase as robust, with revisions for January and February also showing solid retail spending for the first quarter.
Looking ahead, April may mark a return to normalcy, but consumer spending could be mixed due to various factors, including rising debt levels and the increasing use of buy now, pay later plans.
While consumer spending has been supported by stimulus and wage growth, there are concerns about the sustainability of this trend and the potential for a consumer bubble in the future.
