Memorial Day 2025 Weekend Analysis

In this edition, we will analyze how the furniture and mattress industries performed in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Join us as we break down the numbers, highlighting key trends and insights that emerged over the past few days.

Furniture Industry

Foot Traffic

Foot traffic to furniture stores over Memorial Day weekend declined in 2025 compared to the previous year. Traffic started lower on Friday and remained down on the critical Saturday and Sunday period.

The number of opportunities or visits increased slightly on Monday in 2025 vs 2024. However, with Saturday being the highest traffic day, the 11% drop (from 61 to 52 visits) had an outsized impact on the overall result.

Average Ticket

Average order value was a bright spot for the furniture industry in 2025, increasing 2.12% over the previous year’s Memorial Day weekend.

The average ticket gains were consistent across the board:

  • Friday: Up 1.36% from $2,571 to $2,606
  • Saturday: Rose 1.90% from $2,684 to $2,735
  • Sunday: Improved 2.20% from $2,589 to $2,646
  • Monday: Increased 3.17% from $2,493 to $2,572

With Saturday and Sunday being the highest revenue days, the solid lift in average tickets on those two days had the greatest impact.

Daily Revenue

Despite lower foot traffic, the furniture industry managed to grow revenue slightly by 0.56% over Memorial Day 2025. Comparing the two years:

  • Friday and Saturday sales increased modestly in 2025, up 0.54% and 0.38% respectively
  • Sunday revenue declined 0.74%, likely due to the 11% drop in Sunday traffic
  • Monday’s sales improved by 0.65%, benefiting from higher customer visits

Sales Conversion

The furniture industry’s conversion rate, or the percentage of store visits resulting in a purchase, dipped by 1.05% in 2025 vs 2024.

Saturday remained the highest conversion day both years, increasing slightly from 36.3% to 35.8%. However, Sunday’s rate dropped a full percentage point from 32.7% to 33.1%.

With Sunday being the 2nd highest traffic day, this decline likely contributed to the overall decrease in the weekend’s conversion rate. Monday’s performance improved but has less impact due to lower foot traffic.

Mattress Industry

Foot Traffic

The mattress industry saw a substantial 22.7% increase in foot traffic over Memorial Day 2025 compared to 2024.

Friday experienced the largest jump, surging 33% from 6 visits to 8. Monday also rose 20% from 5 to 6.

Saturday and Sunday traffic took a step back though, dropping 10% and 14% respectively. With Saturday being the peak sales day, this decline dampened the impact of Friday’s big surge.

Average Ticket

The mattress industry drove an impressive 11.4% increase in average ticket over Memorial Day 2025 compared to the prior year.

All four days saw double-digit growth:

  • Friday average ticket rose 11.6% from $2,134 to $2,381
  • Saturday increased 11.3% from $2,351 to $2,617
  • Sunday gained 11.3% from $2,254 to $2,508
  • Monday was up 11.1% from $2,173 to $2,415

With Saturday generating the highest average ticket at $2,617, optimizing revenue on this peak day is critical. Combining the 11%+ increase in average ticket with higher Saturday traffic could significantly accelerate growth.

Daily Revenue

Driven by higher traffic and average order values, the mattress industry boosted Memorial Day revenue by 8.1% in 2025 compared to the prior year.

Growth was impressive across the board:

  • Friday sales skyrocketed 18.8% from $5,342 to $5,812
  • Saturday increased 8.8% from $6,927 to $7,536 despite lower traffic
  • Sunday rose 8.8% from $6,083 to $6,618
  • Monday jumped 17.5% from $4,850 to $5,274

These gains showcase the power of improving multiple revenue drivers simultaneously:

  1. Friday’s revenue surge resulted from 33% higher traffic and 11.4% larger tickets
  2. Saturday and Sunday sales still grew 8.8% even with fewer visits thanks to bigger AOVs
  3. Monday benefited from both 20% more traffic and higher average orders

Conversion Rate

The mattress industry’s conversion rate improved slightly by 0.1% over Memorial Day 2025 compared to 2024.

While conversion was up, the gains were modest:

  • Friday increased from 66.1% to 67.2%
  • Saturday rose from 70.1% to 71.3%
  • Sunday ticked up from 65.2% to 66.4%
  • Monday went from 63.5% to 64.7%

Saturday remained the highest conversion day, which is typical for the mattress category. The challenge and opportunity is elevating Sunday and Monday conversions to be closer to Friday and Saturday levels.

Conclusion

Over Memorial Day 2025, the mattress industry outperformed the furniture industry thanks to:

  1. Substantially higher foot traffic (+22.7% vs -2.46%)
  2. Much stronger average ticket growth (+11.4% vs +2.12%)
  3. Slight conversion rate improvement (+0.1% vs -1.05%)

The furniture industry faced challenges on all fronts – declining traffic, lower conversion, and only modest average ticket increases. This resulted in relatively flat revenue performance.

In contrast, the mattress industry excelled at bringing in more shoppers and getting them to spend more, leading to an impressive 8.1% revenue lift compared to just 0.56% for furniture.
