The Traffic Challenge: When More Customers Mean Fewer Sales

Most retailers assume a simple equation: more foot traffic equals more sales.

But Trakwell’s analysis of furniture and mattress stores reveals a more complex reality that could reshape how you think about busy days.

The data tells two very different stories. An Oregon furniture store saw conversion rates climb to 47% on their busiest day (49 visitors), well above their typical 20-30% range. More traffic actually meant better performance.

Meanwhile, mattress retailers experienced the opposite. A Nebraska store that converted 100% of single visitors on quiet days dropped to just 56% conversion when 9 shoppers arrived. Similar patterns emerged across Iowa and Georgia locations.

Why the Difference?

The contrast comes down to customer behavior and operational dynamics. Furniture shopping involves longer browsing periods and family discussions. When traffic spikes during sales events, it typically includes more serious buyers ready to make decisions.

Busy furniture showrooms can even create positive momentum—the energy of other shoppers browsing and deciding can encourage purchase decisions, provided adequate staff support maintains quality service.

For mattress, the sales process requires intensive one-on-one demonstrations that can’t easily accommodate multiple customers simultaneously. Mattress purchases demand focused, personalized consultation in intimate settings. When that one-on-one attention gets diluted by competing priorities, significant sales walk away—sometimes worth five figures.

The Management Factor

Perhaps most telling is the Georgia case study comparing two mattress stores from the same chain. The high-performing location maintained 44% conversion by effectively managing peak traffic periods. The struggling store saw conversion plummet to 30% overall, with weekend rates dropping as low as 15-20% during promotional periods.

What This Means for Your Business

Understanding your specific traffic-to-conversion relationship isn’t just interesting data—it’s actionable intelligence. If you’re experiencing conversion drops during busy periods, the issue isn’t the customers. It’s the systems.

The takeaway is to be able to see what is really happening—to recognize when your traffic hits capacity limits and what to do. Whether that means adjusting staffing levels, implementing appointment systems during major sales, or developing better follow-up processes for customers who couldn’t be served immediately.

One missed connection after a strong in-store experience can send customers straight out your door to a competitor.

Your busiest days should be your best days. But only if you’re prepared for them.
