Circularity comes full circle
Major retailers are embracing “circularity” – a concept that’s actually bringing back some traditional retail practices in new ways. At NRF’s Big Show, IKEA, Target, and Walmart showcased how they’re implementing buy-back programs for everything from furniture and car seats to cell phones, while also expanding into resale markets both in-store and online. Even luxury brands like Coach are getting creative, using recycled materials like post-consumer denim in their products.
The push toward circular retail isn’t just about sustainability – it’s responding to real business demands. Customers are increasingly looking for value-driven shopping options, and retailers are finding that shorter, more traceable supply chains can help them be more resilient. Plus, with new regulations coming into play (like California’s Textile Recovery Act), retailers across the industry are working together to build the infrastructure needed to make these circular practices more efficient and cost-effective.
Over 70 retail executives gathered at NRF 2025 to share their experiences and tackle common challenges, from revitalizing repair services to streamlining reverse logistics. The conversation will continue at the upcoming NRF Reverse Logistics Conference in Las Vegas this March.
Productivity Games: Strung on a line
Looking for an easy way to boost sales during slower periods? “Strung on a Line” is a simple yet engaging game that keeps your sales team motivated throughout the day.
HOW TO SET UP:
Get your supplies ready: a clothesline, clothespins, envelopes, and some prizes (cash or prize certificates). Hang the clothesline in your back room where it’s easily accessible to your team. Place prize certificates or small amounts of cash in some of the envelopes (not all of them), then hang all envelopes on the line using clothespins. Create and post a prize list nearby so everyone knows what they might win, along with a tally board to track winners.
HOW THE GAME WORKS:
Every time a sales associate makes a sale, they get to choose one envelope from the clothesline. If their envelope contains a prize certificate or cash, they get to keep it! The more sales they make, the more chances they have to pick a winning envelope. The game runs for one day, making it perfect for turning around a slow sales day.
Tip for Store Managers: This game works well because it gives immediate gratification – team members don’t have to wait until the end of the day to potentially win. Plus, since not every envelope contains a prize, it encourages associates to keep making sales to increase their chances of finding a winning envelope.
Wayfair Bets on AI to Transform Home Shopping Experience
Wayfair is betting big on AI to transform how customers shop for home furnishings with its new tool called Muse. The platform generates AI-created room scenes based on customer search terms like “retro game room” or “cozy office,” then makes these inspirational images instantly shoppable by connecting them to actual Wayfair products. It builds on the success of their earlier Decorify tool, which has already helped create over 175,000 room designs since its 2023 launch.
This move comes at a critical time for Wayfair, which has been navigating challenging waters with a 2% drop in net revenue and recent workforce reductions. However, with Adobe reporting that 58% of shoppers say generative AI has improved their online shopping experience, Wayfair’s tech investment could help differentiate them in the competitive home furnishings space. The company isn’t stopping at just Muse – they’re integrating AI across their platform to enhance everything from search results to product visualization and personalization, joining retailers like Walmart, Nordstrom, and Poshmark who are also embracing AI to streamline their customer experience.
